Men- how bad is the pain after a vasectomy?

My husband is getting one on Thursday and he is starting to get a bit freaked out. He had Testicular Torsion once when he was a kid and the very thought of this procedure and the potential pain with recovery makes him green. How bad was your pain after the procedure? Did they give you any painkillers, and if so, were they effective?
