Help with knowledge of PC video formats?

each format is just a container (the outer appearance of the box) but inside the "box" you can put anything so there is no best format. However there are some very good codecs (the way the stuff in the box is packed) such as H.264 which is used in blurays or xvid which makes a file of relative small size and good quality. The quality is decided in the resolution which you can normally set when you make a video. Dvds have usually a resolution of 720 x 576 (PAL standard) and Blurays have one of 1920 1080 (full HD). So the best resolution you can get for a dvd is 720 x 576 pixels and for encoding I would choose either XviD or DivX.
