Will blonde highlights work in my colour hair?

I natually have a mahogany red hair, i have dyed it black before and tried highlights but went bright orange! now i have a darkish brown hair colour, will highlights go through my hair or just go orange? i bought the highlighting kit from superdrug pretty strong stuff. It works in my boyfriends mousy coloured hair and i done it over someones light brown hair and it worked fine..will i not work because i have naturally red hair and it dont like to work ? i didnt wanna pay like 100 quid to have it done at he saloon but do you think there make it work? xx
