Why are people reluctant to reveal how much they're paid?

Someone I know IRL has pointed out that this is one of the last great taboos, and she doesn't like it. Once she made me think about it, I agreed. Not telling others what we earn only helps employers, since it allows them to underpay some employees. Maybe we should start talking about it. I could be enlightening.
